Chiang Mai is ready for the opening of the 2017 edition of the OTOP Lanna Expo. This expo will showcase the eclectic range of knick-knacks, healthcare and beauty products, culinary delicacies, clothing and other miscellaneous articles produced by Northern Thailand’s OTOP co-operatives. Chiang Mai’s Thailand Convention and Exhibition Centre is the venue for this exciting event which is scheduled to kick off tomorrow.
The expo will open every day between 10:00 and 20:00 and runs through until Sunday 2 July. Products on offer have been produced in the north and in a region roughly corresponding to the boundaries of the historic Lanna Kingdom. In addition to items made in Chiang Mai, visitors will also be able to buy ones from Mae Hong Son, Lamphun and Lampang.
The organisers say the exhibition halls will be split up into 11 different zones. Stands set up by commercial enterprises will complement the OTOP ones. To honour the memory of the much-beloved Bhumibol Adulyadej, who passed away late last year, the theme of the OTOP Lanna Expo this year is ‘Following the Footsteps of our Father’s Sufficiency Policy’.
At the recent press briefing held to give details about the event, reporters were told there would be a varied programme of cultural performances and a huge assortment of food, snacks and drinks on offer too. OTOP stands for One Tambon One Product. Tambon is the Thai word for sub-district. The 2017 OTOP Lanna Expo is the fifth in the series.
