Last month saw the inauguration of a new flight route linking Chiang Mai with the central Vietnamese seaside city of Da Nang. The service launched during the auspicious Songkran Festival and now operates once daily in each direction. From Chiang Mai, Flight FD 906 departs at 08:05 and lands in Da Nang at 10:00. The return flight, FD 907, takes off at 10:30 and arrives back in Chiang Mai at 12:25.
Thai Airasia’s Chiang Mai-Da Nang flights are a part of its aim of expanding operations to Thailand’s near neighbours – Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam, a grouping the airline refers to as CLMV. The airline already offers daily Chiang Mai-Hanoi flights and has recently launched new routes between Bangkok Don Mueang Airport and Can Tho and Nha Trang in Vietnam.
In a report earlier this year, The New York Times stated that Da Nang was one of the world’s best 52 tourist destination to visit in 2019. The city has evolved from being known simply as the gateway to Hue and Hoi An into a popular destination for beaches, unique sightseeing places and dining choices with a difference. A sign the Chiang Mai-Da Nang service would likely be a popular one was the fact there were 180 passengers aboard when the maiden flight touched down in Da Nang.
