State Railway of Thailand Adds Trains to New Year Timetables

A Thai government official confirmed earlier this month the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) would be adding extra trains to timetables for the New Year holiday. The Transport Ministry’s Anon Luangboribun told media sources that an additional eight trains would be deployed on key routes from Bangkok’s Hua Lamphong Station this Friday and Saturday.

Six more trains will be laid on for the two days of Tuesday 2 and Wednesday 3 January to bring people back to Bangkok. To reach its target of carrying 120,000 passengers on each of the peak travel days, the SRT will be increasing the number of carriages on trains. The additional carriages will be used according to demand, but are expected to be tacked on to popular routes from Bangkok to Chiang Mai, Hua Hin, Surat Thani and Udon Thani.

The New Year and April’s Songkran Festival are the only occasions in the year in which Thais get holidays of more than three consecutive days. They tend to use these longer holidays to visit out-of-the-way tourism sites or family members in distant provinces. Public transport is always crowded in the days before and after New Year’s Day. It is better to pre-book tickets to guarantee a seat or sleeping berth.
